Silvina Alvarez

Violist born in the city of Córdoba, Argentina.

She currently performs as Assistant Principal Viola of the Buenos Aires Philharmonic Orchestra, Teatro Colón, Argentina and Camerata Bariloche.

She began her studies with her father Nestor Alvarez at the age of 6, later continuing her education with maestro Humberto Carfi, who granted her a 4-year scholarship.

At 18 years old, she was admitted through contest in the Córdoba Symphonic Orchestra, where she had her first professional experience as instrumentalist, continuing to obtain a position in the Orquesta Estable del Teatro Argentino de La Plata.


In the year 2000, she won the scholarship Fundación Antorchas to study viola and chamber music with maestro José Bondar. Thanks to the advice and help received from him, Silvina moved to Madrid, Spain to continue her education with M° Alan Kovacs.

In the year 2004, she was accepted by M° Bruno Giuranna to be his student under his tutoring at the Conservatorio Della Svizzera Italiana, where she graduated in the year 2007 and received the Concertist Diploma.

She was invited on behalf of Nobuko Imai

to the Recontres Musicales of the International Music Menuhin Academy, conducted by violinist Alberto Lysy.


There she received a scholarship to take viola, chamber music lessons and also take part in the Camerata Lysy for 2 years. Her mentors were Ettore Causa and Nobuko Imai.

Furthermore, she has studied and performed with highly renowned international artists, such as Gerard Caussé, Jeremy Menuhin, Eric Chumachenko, Alberto Lysy, Christoph Richter, Phillip Graffin, Gabor Tackasz, Micaela Martin, Franz Helmerson, Francois Benda, Massimo Quarta, Robert Cohen, Virginie Robilliard, Avi Avital, Gil Shaham, among others.

After an intense chamber experience in Menuhin Academy and also as a concertist with Camerata Lysy, she was granted a scholarship in the Instituto Internacional de Música de Cámara de Madrid, Escuela Reina Sofia, to continue her studies with the piano quartet called Contrastes. Her professors were Eldar Nelbosin, Bruno Canino.

In parallel, she has collaborated as Principal Viola in the Sinfonietta of Lausanne, Switzerland, Soloist of the Orquesta de Cámara de Cascais e Oeiras, Portugal and Contemporay Music Ensemble of Lugano, Switzerland.

As a teacher, she took part in the courses of Saint Croix, France; Uberlandia, Brasil; Galas del Río, La Paz, Entre Ríos; Chamber Music of Formosa, Festival Virtuosi Gravatá, Recife, Brasil and participates regularly in the Festival Siete Lagos, Bariloche.

In the year 2016, she was invited to represent Argentina in the 43th International Viola Congress, in Cremona, Italy, together with Alicia Belleville, pianist.

In the year 2010, she returned to Argentina to hold the position of substitute Soloist in the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional.

She was part of the Cuarteto Petrus from 2010 until 2014, led by Pablo Saraví.

She performed in many productions of Colon Contemporary having concerts with groups  as London Sinfonietta, Ensamble Modern and Neue Musik Berlin Ensamble.

In November 2018 she shall perform at the 45th IVC Viola Congress, Rotterdam, with the pianist and composer Juan Esteban Cuacci.
